Uber Eats
What it is
A food and grocery delivery platform where you can sign up as a courier and deliver on your own schedule.
Our take
I drive with Uber for passenger trips, but I haven’t personally delivered with Uber Eats. I do use other food delivery platforms, and the basics are very similar — when and where you work, the time a job takes and the distance you travel all matter when working out whether it’s worthwhile.
Good to know
You’ll need to meet Uber’s courier eligibility and vehicle requirements.

DiDi
What it is
A rideshare platform where you can sign up as a driver and accept trips through the DiDi driver app.
Our take
I use DiDi alongside Uber rather than relying on one rideshare app. Running more than one platform gives me another source of jobs and lets me take whichever suitable request comes through first. Promotions can also make a difference, so it’s worth comparing what each platform is offering.
Good to know
Drivers need to meet DiDi’s licence and vehicle requirements.

What it is
A delivery platform where you can sign up as a Dasher and deliver food and other orders.
Our take
DoorDash is another flexible delivery option that I use alongside other gig apps. I like being able to jump online when it suits me, but I still look at the time and distance involved rather than accepting a delivery just because the payout looks good.

PK’s tips for gig work
Find your time and place
There isn’t one ‘best’ area or time that works for everyone. Try different locations and different hours, track the results, and work out what performs best for you.
Look beyond the payout
A $20 job isn’t automatically better than a $12 job. Consider how long it’ll take, how far you’ll travel and where you’ll end up afterwards.
Treat it like a business
You’re a contractor, so you’re responsible for your own tax. Keep records of your income and expenses, and consider using a separate bank account for your gig work to make everything easier to track.
Understand your vehicle expenses
Know the difference between using the kilometre-rate method and claiming actual vehicle expenses. The right approach depends on your circumstances, so keep good records from day one.
Paid surveys
Octopus Group
What it is
An online research panel that invites members to take part in paid surveys.
Our take
I’ve used Octopus Group myself and it does pay, but paid surveys aren’t something I’d consider a replacement for regular income. They can be an easy way to make some extra money in your spare time, especially because there’s no upfront cost to get started.

Our take
AttaPoll makes surveys easy to do from your phone whenever you have a few spare minutes. Like other survey platforms, I’d treat it as a way to earn a little extra rather than something that pays well for your time. Survey availability and how often you qualify can vary.
