Spend & Transfer

We’ve tried different ways of sending, spending and managing money across currencies over the years.

These are the tools we’ve personally used, what we like about them and some things worth comparing before choosing one.

Revolut

What it is

A money app for spending, transferring and managing money across multiple currencies, with additional features depending on your plan.

Our take

Revolut is the money app I use most because it brings a lot of things together in one place. I use it for everyday spending through Apple Pay, holding and exchanging different currencies, shared money, our kid’s account and international spending. I also like having virtual and disposable cards available when buying online.

I’m on a paid plan because I get enough value from the additional features and included benefits, but there is also a free Standard plan.

Good to know

  • Supports multiple currencies and international transfers.
  • Personal, joint and Kids & Teens accounts are available.
  • Physical, virtual and disposable virtual cards are available.
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported.
  • Free and paid plans are available, with different features, limits and benefits.
  • Currency exchange allowances and fees can vary depending on your plan, usage and when the exchange is made.

Wise

What it is

A multi-currency money and transfer service for holding, converting, sending and spending money internationally.

Our take

Wise was one of the first multi-currency money apps I used, particularly for sending and holding money in different currencies. I don’t use it as much these days because Revolut has become my main app and covers more of the features I personally use.

I still think Wise is worth comparing, particularly if your main goal is international transfers or spending in different currencies.

Good to know

  • Supports holding and converting multiple currencies.
  • International transfers are one of Wise’s main features.
  • Physical and digital cards are available.
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported.
  • Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate and shows its conversion/transfer fees separately.
  • Fees vary depending on the currency, amount and type of transaction.
